Squaring The Circle
Squaring The Circle (From Dust to Dust We Return), 2024
Leaded stained glass panels housed in wooden hinged frame.
Dimensions: 1.8m W x 2m H
This work was created with Atelje Stanisic during a month long artist residency at their stained glass studio in Sombor, Serbia. The project was organised through Nova Iskra with the aim of promoting traditional crafts in a contemporary context. Housed in The Applied Art Museum’s permanent collection in Belgrade, this privacy screen occupies a unique area where applied and fine arts intersect, it is both functional and sculptural in its approach.
Conceptually, Squaring The Circle is rooted in ideas surrounding positive unification of humanity through technology and mutual understanding. It draws its visual inspiration from astrological, religious and pop culture symbolism, which inform the panels underlying structure and composition.
The four panels are constructed with Lamberts Glass using coloured antique, table rolled cathedral, wispy opal and medium & heavy seeded clear. Additional finishes of painting and sandblasting were employed in an experimental and expressive manner taking their cues from the loose approach and playful rhythm of the lead lines. Much of the intent behind the piece was to break past norms within the cannon of stained glass, while conversely, celebrating aspects of them in the process.
